"Snowbirds" refers to the huge population that spends winters in Florida and summers up north. They spend winters in Florida to escape the snow, just like migrating birds. Of course most of our "snowbirds" spend a lot more than just a few months here, as Florida has homestead laws that provide excellent reasons to make Florida your primary residence. Incidentally, the summer weather in Florida's First Coast can be hot, but is often less sultry than up north, due to ocean breezes and cooling afternoon showers.

One more point: this area has a much lower incidence of snowbirds than most of Florida; our neighborhoods do not become summer ghost towns!
